Hello,

I recently purchased a Parker 21 SE with a 2001 225 OX66. While looking over the motor today I noticed a wiring harness that was disconnected and pushed down by the lower cowling. I plugged it together and definitely fits like its supposed to be connected. I have attached a picture... can anyone tell me if I should have this plugged in or unplugged? I have ran the boat and everything was fine while it was unplugged as far as I know.

I have basic a basic tach gauge and thats it. No fancy yamaha gauges if that makes a difference.

Thanks for any help on this as I'm concerned as to why its been unplugged.

Justin

Hmmm... just today... before I plugged those together I started having a trim problem. I'm getting clicking when trying to tilt motor up. But when I tilt down it works and then works when going up... seems intermittent. I'm assuming the T&T relay is going which seems very common from reading on THT.

Nope sorry, 'clicking' means the relay is working but the motor isn't, as your trim motor brushes are worn. If/when it happens, rapping on the motor housing w/ a block of woodmor plastic mallet will confirm this.

When a relay doesn't click is what tells you it is broken. Those parts are rarely, if ever intermittent. They either work or they don't. Any any intermittent operation would be if/when there were huge temperature swings only.

And uhhhhhhhhh ... any info learned from THT is the last place I'd ever diagnose or attempt to fix an OB motor with ...

Thanks Dale and Merry Christmas!

I'm glad you told me this before I bought a new relay. I guess I will use jumper cables and bypass the relay straight to the trim motor. I should have the same intermittent up/down problem when wired direct so that would confirm the TT motor is bad correct?

Also, on THT people said they rebuilt their trim motor instead of replacing it. Is it worth the trouble to do that and will it last? Or should I just buy a new one. I see some generic ones for $100 on ebay and amazon instead of the $500 yamaha replacement.

While they can be rebuilt IF the housing is in good shape, I've seen people drop $60 to $80 on a rebuild only to be told the housing is shot. Car starter rebuild places used to do them, but I find that a dying bizness, like many other things in this 'disposable' society of ours.

FWIW I never buy a direct OEM replacement motor, but buy the Sierra or other ISO approved and made models off eBay. Doubt I have paid more than $120 to $150 for one ...

I also heavy clean & grease the new install bolts and bolt holes, and paint the housing w/ a few good coats of Rust-Oleum paints.

Do you know if I can take the T&T motor off without removing the outboard from the boat? The replacements seem to show a 3 bolt mount, but when looking at my OX66 I can only see access to two of the three bolt holes on the trim motor? Thanks for the help.

I did mine last spring I got a sierra online around 300 Yamaha wanted 7 to 8 hundred and yes you need to unbolt the motor and bring it out a bit to get that third bolt mine is a 2000 225 ox66 on a 2310 braket
