Hey everyone,

Per my prior posts, I picked up a new 2014 2320 w/225 Yamaha. Love the boat so far but still have issues when backing down.

I do trim the motor all the way up when backing down but I find that when I give it some extra throttle the boat shutters/vibrates (kind of loudly) and it just doesn't seem right. Am I missing something? Anyone else experiencing this? Thoughts? Suggestions?

Great forum here. Have learned a lot.

Thank you!

I can't imagine what would cause this. Are you close to you dealer where you purchased your boat. With a brand new boat, I would have your dealer test ride it with you so they can see what is causing what your experiencing. Good luck

I bet it is that prop ... (probably has quite the rake) nothing to worry about, if she responds OK. They don't 'cut' the water in reverse ... they 'beat' it to death!

^^^^ This ^^^^

So, should I look at replacing the prop? Not sure I understand how the prop could cause the boat to shudder when I hit the gas in reverse. Not saying I think you are wrong, just trying to understand what is happening.

thanks again all.

Props are designed to get 'traction' in forward gear because that is where the cup is located (on the front face of the prop).
In reverse, you are working with the back side of the prop which has very little bite because you are working with the curved face.
Adding too much power while in reverse only 'beats' the water, rather than pulling through it which is difficult enough already due to the shape.

Not sure if my explanation works, but take a look at this prop and maybe it will make sense.

More throttle causes exhaust to exit through the hub...then the prop sucks it in. I bet that contributes to the vibration as well.

Nothing wrong with that prop. How long have you had your new boat?

Had the boat about a month and a half. Prop is fine when in forward. Just trying to troubleshoot issues in reverse.

I have noticed that on a tillered skiff, if I juice the throttle too much in reverse, the motor tries to 'climb' as the revs increase.
That was on a manual tilt motor, not one with hydraulic trim and tilt.

Something isn't right. have your dealer check it out. Might be it's not going into reverse fully. is it mechanical or fly-by-wire controls?

That sounds like good advise. With a month and a half old boat, I would be taking it to the dealer or having the dealer come to me to check the boat out. One of the benefits of buying a new boat should be not needing to fix issues yourself. Of course it's understandable to try to figure out as much as you can yourself so as to be informed when interacting with the dealer. They need to step up and check it out for you though. Good luck!

I agree with this comment. I have a 2801 w twin 225's and my boat sometimes rattles and vibrates when backing down...so do a lot of boats I have been on including sport fishers. I don't think it's something to worry about...I'm no expert though.

Just checked and the prop is a Yamaha Saltwater Series II 17-t 15 1/2
That prop should be fine. Try backing without tilting up the motor as much. If that doesn't work I would call the dealer, like people have stated it's only 6 weeks old, let them make a decision.

I have a 2014 2320 with 300 yammie does the same thing. It's a normal condition. The boat vibrates and makes a lot of noise while in reverse the more gas the louder it gets.

Normal behavior. The noises you're hearing are the transom lids vibrating. With time you'll learn just how far to tilt up and how much gas to give it to reduce the racket.
