I know this has been discussed before but I figured I would start a new topic to see what other guys are actually using.

First time for me with 4 strokes and I will be changing the oil on them next week sometime. My manual says to use 10w-30 or 10w-40. I prefere to use Mobile One in my other vehicles, can I stick with the same stuff. I know alot of guys stick with yamalube and I assume overpay at the dealers. My engines are out of warranty so I don't have that worry.

The other issue is viscosity, 10w-30 or 10w-40? I plan on changine every 50 hours so my plan now is to go 10-40 then switch to 10-30 for the fall run. Do the same rules apply as in cars?

What do you 4 stroke guys do? Brand and every thing?
Anyone have a good source for cheap Yammi parts?

Bear with me I'm a 2 stroke Evinrude guy going Yammi 4 stroke. :D :D
Any other tips or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

I can't see any reason to ever use 10W-40 in the summer if 10W-30 is recommended. I've used Yamaha 4 stroke oil in my Yamaha built Mercury 25 but I got it free for the first Oil change. Next time I'll use a parts store for the cheapest synthetic on sale or best rebate. I don't think it's important which brand but buy a name brand top quality oil.

A little thicker on startup? Just car thinking on my part, Why would they reccomed two different viscosities? I agree with you on quality name brand. I like Mobile One, I think I am leaning in that direction. Comments?

Brian,

Congrats on the new to you boat. She is a beaut.

WRT the oil, there is always a raging discussion about the synthetic topic over on www.TheHullTruth.com Recommend you go over there and register and do the searches.

Bottom line is that a lot of folks are running Amsol or Mobile 1 (full synthetic) in their Yamaha 4-strokes. And there are a lot of folks who won't budge off of the Yamaha 4-stroke oil for fear of voiding the warranty. Right now, I'm in still in the second camp.

When you have $10k-$20k tied up in a motor, and fuel is over $3.50 a gal, the cost of oil kind of disappears in the noise. I run Mobile 1 in both of my cars and the portable generator and the pressure washer. Last time I picked up Mobile 1, it was running about $6.75 at the Post Exchange ($7.50 on the outside). The last time I bought Yamaha 4-S oil for my twin F-115s, it was over $10 a qt.

over $10 for yamaha oil,
I've been paying less than $5.00 a quart, it's less than mobil 1 here in Ma.
Also, Yamaha 4 stroke oil is 5w- 30, not 10-40
Dave

I have been paying around $5 per quart of YamaLube at my dealer. I will switch to Mobil One when it gets to be substantially cheaper than the Yamaha product.

I've been doing my own oil changes by the book. I use the Yamaha product only because I like the idea of showing my face (and my money) at the local Yamaha shop I would use should I have trouble. This also creates a paper trail (nice computer record) of the products purchased to show the engine was serviced at appropriate intervals.

Will it ever make a real difference? Probably not. Will I ever need to prove what I did for maintenance? Probably not.

I double checked my manual this morning and it says 10w-30, 10w-40 recommended. No specification to which is better for seasonal use or anything. Are the dealers recommending 5w-30 or maybe the larger motors want a little thicker oil at operating temp? What engine are you running Capt. Ronnie?

Just an FYI - I went to the Yahmaha dealer today to get the goods for changing the fluids and they gave me 10W-30 oil. The tech said Yahmaha is recommending 20W-40 for tropical climates but that does not describe our area. 5w-30 does not offer the pprotection needed for extended runs. Good luck everyone. :D :D :D

When you guys say that you use synthetic mobil 1, is that the same oil as used in cars? I was told that outboard motor oil is different because outboards rev higher than car engines do and so I should use marine 4 stroke oil. As for the brand, my local dealer uses honda 4 stroke oil for my 4 stroke suzuki. He is a dealer for both and says that there is really no difference. He says that manufacturer's pretty much rebrand someone else's oil. Its like gasoline, when I worked for Chevron refinery, a lot of smaller gas stations like BP, ARCO buy our gas and sell it at their gas stations.

Oil is oil. Working in a refinery you probably know more than me but as long as the ratings are good the oil is the same. From what I gather different brands may, and I say MAY have other additives on top of the base oil. Cleaners and sludge reducers and such. I went with Yamma lube this time because I wanted to build a relationship with the local dealer. I wanted some info from them and if I ever need them in the future they know me.I think I will go Mobil One next time.

Anyone have a good on;ine source of oil filters and stuff?
