I had my 2017 2820 pulled out of the water prior to the hurricane threat. It lives in a slip on the lower Potomac River (salt water). I went down to spend the day today cleaning prior to putting her back in the water and the bottom of the tub was caked with barnacles, also, had them to a lesser degree on the sides and back of the tub. The bottom of the boat itself looked great, just a very few barnacles on the stern area. So why on the tub? Everything was painted at the same time and same paint. Is it because much of the tub is out of the water (I guess) when the boat is on plane and the tub doesn't get scrubbed clean like the bottom when under way? Or due to the aluminum under the bottom paint? Thank you...

Not sure WHAT paint you used....But that could be bad. A bottom paint with Copper in it will eat the Hell out of alum.

You want to use a paint designed for alum. Like Interlux Trilux 33

The Dealer said they used Pettit Unepoxy......I don't know if they primed the tub. Next Spring is season 3, I plan to prep the bottom and apply a high quality ablative.

John, I have been using MICRON CF (Copper Free) for the past 4 years with very little growth. I did base coat with Interlux 2000 prior to painting.

Different paints work different in other areas .....Water temps, salinity have a lot to do with it. Ask around the boat yards in your area to find out what is working best "There".

John, I live in the same area as you and the Pettit Unepoxy is used often around here, however, not on Aluminum.

I assume when you say tub you are referring to your bracket, which is aluminum. Pettit Unepoxy website says "Suitable for all non-aluminum boats" which I would take to mean not suitable for Aluminum parts (like bracket). Now, you mentioned the dealer installed it so I assume you are referring to Tri-State Marine (Parker Dealer). If that is the case, I wouldn't think they would have made a mistake on the paint because they are very knowledgeable for this area and one of the largest Parker dealers on East Coast so know the boats (but I could be wrong). Find out if they used it on your Bracket.

On another note, we have had extremely abnormally fresh water (low salinity) this year due to the high volume of rain. I know it has changed the fishing here in the Potomac to the point where we have had much less higher salinity fish and much more nasty catfish than I have ever remembered (to put it in perspective, I have never caught a catfish here in over 40 years of fishing the potomac, however snagged a few trolling for striper/rockfish this year. They are that terribly thick). This could have also affected the type of growth in the water with normal paint used around here, just a thought.

Thanks all

Madgar, I'll ask Tristate, who knows, perhaps they intended to use a different paint on the tub but the guy doing the job forgot. But I'll say that there were virtually no barnacles on the tub last year (first year of paint) however only the tub was completely caked when I pulled the boat 3 weeks ago. Completely agree about the water salinity this year and catfish, I've never caught so many while targeting Stripers... I'll get her back in the water this week and finish out the season, then will figure things out over the winter. Thanks all....
