I believe the technical answer was on boatered, but because I couldn't locate the search button, I asked the question again. Also found a pile of links on thehulltruth, but also asked the question again.

Bottom line, is that running in both is OK, as long as your batteries are approximately equal and one hasn't failed (lost a plate). If you have voltage and amp meters on the helm for each battery and have a habit of checking them often, then running in both is probably OK. For the rest of us, who don't have those meters, and who get sidetracked and forget which position the switch was in, running in both is a bad habit to get into.
