If you have coaming pads, make sure the screws used for the "hanging" brackets aren't too long. Mine were and I fortunately discovered it early. It works for me. The screws kind of help secure the buffer material. Everything important goes under there in a pilothouse.

I’d still recommend cutting that off, or at least knocking the tip off with a file. Screws that are too long like that are a fast track to compromised wire insulation and very hard-to-troubleshoot electrical issues.
