I've got zero problem splicing wires. The problem is I can't seem to get the wire to move in or out of the hole through the hull. There is a lot of sealant in the hole and I dont want to damage the wire while digging it out.

Is there anyway to tug on the wires from above and verify that you have 6” to 8” of slack? Is should have that much but depending on how they secured them on instal. I had feet of it. You will have to take a flat head screwdriver or something and clean out the sealant to get the wire to move as you have discovered. They wire is tough as it has a shielding covering 2 more separately shielded wires so you can pull hard on it and it should be ok. I do think your method of taking them apart may/should work ok though? You can always try it and hit the button without mounting so it will be quick to test. Sorry my comment was snarky. Good luck.
