Was out with a friend yesterday who was using his Penn downriggers. For whatever reason we struggled with the release clips trying to get them set and not tripping prematurely. The clips he used were right at the ball. We tried both a tab type (line went thru the tab) and a release type clip. To be honest success was marginal.
Who makes the best release clip????? Is there a technique to using them that works best? Seen some that are on a wire that keeps the clip about 12" off the ball.
Anyway the result was one nice striper.....lots of boats in the upper bay but no one seemed to be be doing well.
Read a few older posts about DR's and it seems there is mixed feelings about there use here in the bay......if I could get the release clip working well, it seems to me this is a nice way to easily get your lure into the right water column.
For our upper bay depths, a simple manual DR should work well.
Thanks for any inputs and advice!
