Just picked up a 2004 Parker 1801 with a 115 Yamaha! Boat is in good shape, trailer and hull paint not so much.

I'm in Portland Maine, and plan on trailering it everywhere, so first order of business is getting the trailer in top shape. Will fish salt/fresh with it . I'm considering removing the old hull paint, and shining it back to original condition. Curious what some of you might suggest, pros/cons? Will need to figure out some under gunnel fly rod storage, and replace some of the line grabbing hardware for now.

Been digging through the pages here since I pulled the trigger on this...Great resource here, with a ton of good info!

You said paint. I assume you mean gelcoat. Gelcoat is easy to polish/wax. There are any number of products that will work. If you have never done it be careful and don't get too aggressive.

If you are referring to removing the bottom paint... yes it can be done, but it is a LOT of work and you may never get it back to a 'factory finish' anyway.
There are people here who have done it, so if they check this thread, I will let them tell you what is involved.

Another option for a previously bottom painted, trailered boat, is to sand and re-paint with a 'hard' bottom paint of the type generally seen on sailboats.

Search the Projects section for information on both methods.

Thanks for the replies.

To clarify: The previous owner had painted below waterline as he kept it in a slip. I plan to trailer exclusively. So I am considering removing the paint below waterline, and going for the clean look (not necessarily factory finish:). Prior owner used ablative paint on it, and it is completely worn off toward the bow. Seems from many of the past threads I have read here (thanks!), I would need to sand/sodablast/etc the old paint off to repaint anyway, based on the current condition. I would rather invest some time now to remove the paint back to gelcoat, then wax etc for future maintenance instead of repainting.

Any advise is welcome. Thanks
