Gaff question

I have a really good gaff that I got when we bought our boat, it was part of the boat deal, it is a Bamboo one with a galvinized hook, and is a rusty as can be, I have actually hung it up on the wall at my Plumbing shop, but I want to now use it, anyone have any idea how to get it clean or would it be better to just buy a new one ?

Sand 'crust' off, leaving smooth rust there and paint with special primer that turns rust black. Let dry per can. Then paint with fish-oil paint in silver, like Rust-Oleum or TrailerCoat. Let dry per can (could take days!) then re-coat.

I'd see about putting a stainless hook on it. Bamboo gaffs are awesome, don't get rid of it if that doesn't work out.
