Wondering if anyone has had experience with Older Garmin GPS units not locking onto satellites and if so is there a good remidy to fix the problem. I currently have a Garmin 492 that will come on fine but will not lock onto satellites. I have tried the soft reset stated on the Garmin website and it worked for a few days then quit again. Garmin also has a software update via SD card for $50.00. Does this work? Thanks

At work and not sure with version currently installed. Unit was purchased in 2006 and has never been updated. If I am going to spend the $ to update I would like to know if this resolves the issue. Thanks

How do you get the aftermarket readers to work with the Garmin products. I have read that one must use Garmin exclusive products.

Why am I not able to acquire satellites with my GPSMAP 292/298, 392/398, or 492/498 device?

There could be a few causes of the device not acquiring satellites. If the device has moved a large distance since the last time it has acquired satellites or has been turned off for longer than a few weeks or months, the device may not be able to acquire the satellites correctly.

The first troubleshooting step is to perform an AutoLocate procedure. This procedure will clear the device's memory of previous satellite information, and try to download new information.

Note: This will not clear any user data like waypoints, routes, and tracks.

To perform the AutoLocate procedure, please follow these steps:

Start with the device powered OFF
Press and hold the Page button and Power ON the device
Continue to hold both the Page and Power button until the I Agree button is highlighted in the lower right corner of the screen
Press the Enter button

The device should now switch to the GPS satellite screen. Leave the device in clear view of the sky for at least 10-20 minutes to acquire satellites. If the device acquires the satellites before 20 minutes, the device can be used or powered off.

If the AutoLocate procedure does not correct the issue, the next step is to update the internal operating software of the device to the latest version. Please refer to the FAQ titled "How do I update the internal operating software of my GPSMAP 292/298, 392/398, or 492/498 device?" for more information.

I buy USB sd and other memory card readers from meritline.com for $3 with free shipping

Nope....That will not work....492 takes old style garmin card.

Here is a pix of the card and reader. The latest OS system that it will work with is Windows XP....Will NOT work with Windows 7 or 8.

I own a few 492's....I like them...They were good machines. I have one laying around and 1 in service.
