Any idea what causes batteries to become hot? i could smell something strange when running the boat today, can't even begin to describe what it was like, but it was never there before. i opened up the battery box at the dock with all power off and could here a gurgling sound and believe it was a battery. when i felt the battery one was hot compared to the other. when i got home the battery had cooled off and the gurgling subsided significantly but still made a sound. i have no idea what this could be.

I think I can point you in the correct general direction but I believe overcharging is one thing to look into. Beyond that I can only guess as to why but perhaps a voltage regulator or the alternator. Not sure if a loose connection could do it? See what others say. Good luck!

thank you for the info. i pulled the batteries and had them tested as they are 5 years old now, no good of course. going to start with new batteries and go from there.

So after replacing the batteries with two optima blue tops i ran the boat and they still got hot. tested the voltage with the boat not running and both batteries read 13.6V and then 16.3V with the engine running. Seems to be the voltage regulator which should arrive in the mail today or tomorrow. I'm going to have the batteries checked to make sure i didn't drop a cell.

Sounds like you are on the right track. I've been looking at those Blue Tops for mine when it's time to replace. I'm hoping that I get 1 or 2 more seasons out of my current ones though. From what I have read they appear to be top notch. Let us know how things turn out.

So just put the new regulator/rectifier on and that seemed to do the trick. Everything is back in range charging at 14.3V at idle, revved up to 2000 rpm and is charging at 14.9V on both batteries. Pretty simple fix as well luckily.

That still sounds a little high.... 14.2 -14.3 is what you want for Max.

Are you checking right at the battery with a digital VOM ? Perhaps try a different VOM first.

I've wiped out brand new batteries with a brand new charger that was defective on one bank. I check my chargers a LOT closer now. In fact It took 3 different chargers to get one good one. Guest Brand.
