Went fishing the other day, loaded the transom fish box on my 2520 with ice (and fish) BUT after about 6 hours, the ice had pretty much melted.

I think I saw somewhere where it was supposed to be insulated, but it's not very effective.

Has anyone tried to further "insulate" the fish box? Any luck?

Talk to CP member Porkchunker.
He has been talking about that upgrade for awhile now... :)

I would like to her some ideas too.

I have heard some ideas on the box itself, but more important would be the lid. Anyone thought of replacing the starboard lid with a custom insuated fiberglass lid?

As for the box itself, I've heard some mention the "spray" insulating foam like that used on door jams. I was thinking gluing sheets of foam board (like what is used for insulating the exterior homes) around the fish box - all four sides and the bottom.

I love the location and size of the transom fish box but it doesnt work very well in the Carolina summers.

I have not done any mods to my fish box, but have some ideas.

First is to get some foam sprayed up against the outside of the fish box from the underside. Not the kind you buy in a can at Lowes, but a professional grade...like the kind they spray on the inside of the siding and 2/4 walls of new homes. It is a 2-part stuff and gets mixed in the spray head.

The other thing I'm thinking of doing is taking one of those silver screens one places on the inside of the car window to reflect the sun out of the car in the summer. I have one for my truck that is considerably bigger than one for a car. One truck-size screen is probably long enough to cover both hatches. Will cut it to fit and hold it down with velcro. That should reflect a lot of the sun and heat from the top side.

Anyone else with ideas?

Here's a stupid question. Why could you not apply the spray insulation on the inside of the fish box? Wouldn't that have the same effect?, and it wouldn't be so unsightly. :?:

The other option has been to buy one of those fish bag coolers. I just don't want all the clutter on deck. Maybe you could buy one that would fit IN the transom box?

Forum member Blue Sky mentioned he removed his from the 2530 and insulated it. Maybe he'll chime in.

The sprayed on insulation would go on the outside of the box, but up underneath the full transom. It would be hidden and not visible. Open the battery box doors in the full transom models and look up under the fishbox from the underside...that is where the foam would go.

Hmmm. I'll have to take a look under there! Seems like it might be difficult to appy correctly. Pretty tight under there...

I have a 1998 2530 with a Transom Fish Box installed by Parker.

In my case, it appears they forgot to insulate the fiberglass box with spray foam. When I asked Parker they said the fish boxes should always have spray foam on them.

I tried to apply the spray foam "Great Stuff" in place from under the I/O box but that didn't work very well. I removed the box, applied "Great Stuff" and put the box back in. I used a sharp, flat fillet knife to break the silicone seal around the lip of the box before prying out.

The box is now insulated very well and the "Great Stuff" is holding up well.

Any idea how far back they supposedly insulated them. I have a 1996 2530 and the underside is just fiberglas. I just store things in it.

Where ? I peeked underneath and didn't see any.

I'm going to write Parker and see if there is any reason you can't spray the INSIDE of the cooler...
