Laptop as GPS

Maybe dumb question, but I see a lot of boats with laptops and they are the gps, like on Deadlest catch, is it a spiecal program or what ? I have two good GPS, but it looks cool the way they have it set up, is it easy as a program and external antenna

I will check it all out, I have a hard time seeing my 1732, just need a bigger screen, so I am going to check it all out ! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, I am worried if it gets rough, the computer will fall and break
