I recently moved my Airmar P79 transducer to a different location. In the past, I had used mineral oil as the liquid used in the base. A small crack developed in the base and when I ordered the new base from Airmar, they asked me what I was using as the liquid.

They told me while that, in the past, they recommended mineral oil, they are now advising against it. They have even re written their manuals.

They are now recommending antifreeze. But not just any antifreeze. You need antifreeze that is made with propylene glycol and NOT ethanol glycol. Apparently, ethanol glycol eats away at the silicone bead used to secure the base of the ducer to the surface and, over time, will leak and possible damage the base.

New base $13. After some research I found that Amsoil makes a propylene gycol antifreeze. Does anyone know of any other brand that might work?

Ok. Not having much luck with the mineral oil alternative. I tried to contact a local Amsoil store and it seems like they operate like Amway. Have to join some club, then you become a member, yada yada. I just want 2.4 oz of the stuff.

Anyone have any other suggestions? I think I read somewhere that someone used vegetable oil?

Any RV or Water system Antifreeze is Propylene Glycol based. They are all diluted however. None are 100%. If I remember correctly, the stuff that is rated for -100degrees F is about 60% Propylene Glycol.

You guys were on the money. Here is the answer from Gemco (airmar distibutor).

You can use the pink RV antifreeze which is used in the water tanks as well if the propylene glycol is not available.
