mokee -- one would think it would go without saying..... but go to the ramp and watch for it. Seems like many have a lot of faith in dogs. :(

fogwarning - I have a powerwinch that utilizes a clutch type arrangement and have no faith whatsoever in the clutch holding under strain. I added a ratcheting hold down strap that runs from the bow eye to the base of the winch post and it gets released with the safety chain when I splash. Also had a similar deal on the last trailer before I added the powerwinch. IMO folks that tow ought to consider adding a hold down strap for safety.

I also agree folks need to check the position of the dog on their winch to avoid pitfalls at the ramp.

Just in case it's not obvious to everyone, you get much better control of your boat if you use dock line that is long enough to go from the bow cleat to
the stern cleat . Make sure the line is connected to stern cleat on the side facing the wind and or current. Using this method you avoid the free swinging stern that results for using only a bow line. I made up a line to fit my boat with a loop in both ends. I put this line on in the parking lot and wrap the slack around the winch post , back the boat down, unhook the safety chain and winch strap and then let the dock line slip on the winch post to control the boat as it slips off the trailer. Then you can tie you boat to the dock by using a dock cleat or post positioned midship . This holds both bow and stern securely.
I am sure this is not news to most of you but I am amazed how many people I see with an 'out of control" stern blocking the launch ramp.
