I wanted to ask those who might have some experience with this subject and might help me make an educated decision. I have been wanting to replace the dreaded cooler seat in my 1801 and have finally had it. I have two options my boat yard has a used one that is in need of a good cleaning that well is ok. It does not have a back rest and but is stainless steel tubing. The other option is to go new through Custom Marine down in NC for double the cost. It would be a brand new leaning post and aluminum tubing.

I don't plan on selling this boat anytime soon. Do I go new or used anyone want to give two cents?

This was the very best investment i have ever made for a boat! i had it don custom from pipedreams marin in mays landing Nj for 450 installed. All aluminum 4 rod holders

It mostly depends on your usage. If you live-bait fish then get a bait well w/ a leaning post, they seem to work very well. My 1801 has the Parker leaning post but it only accomodates a 56 quart cooler. That's no huge issue as I am mostly a catch-n-release (reds, specks & grays) fisherman. It also works very well to carry drinks for my wife, kids & friends whom love to go tubing/ wakeboarding. If I go to fill the freezer (flounder, stripers, spades), I take a 120 quart along between the jump-seats. I mounted 4 s/s clamp-on rod holders on the aft tube behind the seat cushion. The cooler passes under the bottoms of my rocket launchers w/ 2" clearance.

When i had my 18 I hated the cooler seat...all i wanted was something to lean on or sit on, especially when in no wake zones.

Storage is always an issue. I always did drink/food in the cooler seat and messy stuff in the front cooler seat.

Hey Flukenewsty,

Did you have Pipedreams do the entire baitwell/leaning post or was the baitwell already there? It looks like the factory Parker baitwell so I'm guessing the $450 was just for the leaning post and rod holders. Is this correct?

Also, thanks for the picture. It's worth a whole bunch of words, as the saying goes.

Thanks,
Fly Rod

Don at pipe dreams was really good to work with. I printed a picture of the factory leaning post and just drew on the photo what i wanted. He had a few ideas as well and this is what we came up with. It is thru bolted on top of the factory installed livewell.
