My intake for my baitwell is one of those donut feedthroughs and is always clogging up with seeweed. So I decide to buy and install a bronze rectangular strainer.

Question what size/length screws should I use? the feed through is in the middle of the stern about 8 inches in.

Is this the right steps?
My thought is to: Clean the area of old bottom paint on where the bronze strainer would touch bottom. Measure twice and drill screw holes to a certain dept not to to go through the hull. Before fitting strainer fill holes with 5200 and then screw strainer in place.

Strainer is 10" by 4 1/2" model RSS-650?

Thanks

I would be using a clamshell pickup like this. It is much easier to connect to a pump and works really well

How long of screws can I use to attach either the (clam shell or rectangular) strainer? Also, any comments on my steps to secure the strainer?

What boat are you installing this on??

That strainer you have there is an excellent choice for what you are doing, we have similar type strainers feeding 671-ti's on our 40' ocean, so no worries about the holes clogging. They are designed to be self cleaning, and the screens can be removed for cleaning on haul out or even in the water if needed, just remember not to paint with copper based paint.

As far as screws?? #6 or #8 should fit well, hard to tell by a picture. Bring the strainer with you and fit the screw head into the recess.

As far as length? The bottom of my 2530 was a bout 3/4" where I installed my transducer which is about exactly opposite of my pump intake, your boat may be different.

Steps? I would;

1. make sure the strainer fits over the intake properly.
2. clean all bottom paint from the area where strainer will be installed.
3. line up and mark holes where screws will go.
4. select proper size bit for screws being used.
5. drill holes using strainer as template. Don't rely on pencil marks. You can mark the bit with tape if you are concerned.
6. install dry.
7. clean all mating surfaces with acetone.
8. reassemble with 5200. Don't over tighten screws.

Hope that helps.

I would be installing this on my Parker 2520.

Good info on the steps.

So I'll guess if the hull is 3/4" thick that 1/2" screws would the proper length to use?

Thank You All.

Don't assume anything.
I went to mount my bilge pump lower in the hull (off of the 'pad') and went through the hull.
It was not a fun day, but West Systems fixed me.

Yeah, I also suspect the hull probably has different thicknesses in different areas.

Worst case, you could always use a bolt, which might be a better option.
