I'd like to fix some minor scratches on my 1801 on the top side (particularly where the ancher and chain are retrieved). I've attemped this with sucess using some West Marine gel coat kits. They work well but I can't seem to get the paint match down. I know Parker sells the gel coat can. Does anyone have experience with the Parker gel coat? I'm wondering what grit sand paper or buffing compound to use so you can't notice the repairs. Or should I leave it to a professional.

Hi:

Remind me next week and I'll send you an ounce or two of Parker gelcoat, as I am traveling in Europe on business for 2 weeks. No Parkers here ... thus no fun, but the pints of bitters were pretty good in England and the Guinness here in Ireland is OUTSTANDING!

Do a search on gelcoat using my name, Porkchunker, or cbigma ... we've posted a few DIY articles with pictures.

Thanks Dale,
I have found everything I needed in the post you reccomended. I appreciate the offer for the gel coat but I can pick up my own. Thanks again. Greatly appreciated. That will teach me to do a topic search before I post.

Sounds like you know what you are doing. My only tip is to finish up with 1200 wet/dry (wet) and do all sanding with a small sanding block such as the edge of a flat piece of 3/4 starboard about 2-3" long. Keep rubbing until it is undetectable. Buff it it out with 3M finesse It II. That's the same way they patch defects out of the mold at the factory.

I have similar chips on my 18cc.
Could you take some before, after and in progress shots for us future do-it-yourselfers?

Good luck with your project!

I plan on taking the pictures and will display them, even if I botch it up. I don't plan on doing the repairs until the spring though.
