I am going to install outriggers on my 2820 shortly. While I have a preference for a roof mount I wondered if anyone has a different opinion or experience with a different mounting location.

Thanks for any input

Which roof? You've got like 3 different ones on there... :D

Personally, I would go for a set of Lee Jr. bases mounted on the sides of the PH. Top those off with a set of single spreader poles and you'll be all set to pull heavy baits. :)

I am thinking about the pilot house roof. I am concerned the side mounts would get in the way more than the roof mounts. I'm going the make a decision next week early.

Thanks

Brian

To me ... the decision of placement involves 2 issues ... (1) would you need or want to get to the bow while the riggahs are deployed and (2) where would you feel the most comfortable setting them out, standing up on the outside gunwhales or from down in the cockpit?

Now, here is one possible advantage rooftops have over side mounts - HEIGHT. Some bars/lures need height from the line to run right. With rooftop mounts, already I have a 4' to 5' height advantage over side mounts.

For my toona fishing, the answer was simple ... roof mounts. I can deploy, rig, and adjust right from the front corners on each side of the cockpit. In some seas I've been in, I'm glad I was in the pit and not out on the rail making adjustments or setting new rigs.

Now I'll admit side mounts look pretty cool though ... maybe more 'battlewagon' looking ;) .

I installed Rupp's Z30 Top Guns on my 23SE's T-Top and they have been great. They are heavy duty and easy to use. I'd recommend you take a look at those. I may upgrade my outriggers to Rupp's 15 foot telescoping outrigger poles though. You have a lot going on on that roof of yours. You may want to consider telescoping outriggers poles as well.

Take a look at www.ruppmarine.com for some of your options. Rupp is not cheap but looking at your boat your obviously not very concerned about that!

I really appreciate your input and will let you know what I end up doing next week. I will also post pics when finished. I'm fishing next Wed and Thurs so I might not post the photos until next weekend.

Thanks again

Brian

Brian,
Originally I went with taco 350's on my boat and taco 18 foot telescopic poles. I was able to pull 2 48's bars on each riggah. I have a 23SE. Because I didnt have plates welded into my T-Top structure, I have bolted plates, and because of the length of poles there was a tremeandous amount of strain put on my T-Top structure causing one of the welds to fail. I went against my T-Top mfg reccomendation of going with 15 foot outriggers because I wanted a wider and bigger spread for my boat. (ego driven)
He replaced and beefed up the weldes "L" brackets that connect to my console and added a few more just to be on the safe side.
I exchanged the 18 footers for 15 footers and it has been all is good in the hood.
My only reccomendation is to make sure that wherever you are going to mount your outriggers, if they are like mine or Uncle Matt's is make sure the location and structure will be able to handle the torquing of your mounts and poles.
I was fortunate enough to have my T-Top fabricator fix my ego driven mistake and make the boo boo go away.
I love having the taco 350's as I can adjust the rise of my outrigggers from underneath and find the sweet spot while running my spreader bars.
The only knarly thing about telescopic outriggers is climbing on the gunnel to extend and deploy while out at sea. I supposed I could do that on the hard before launching.
Good luck and post photos!

Thanks for the input Fishpimp. If it is too rough to get on the gunnels I would probably go up to the second station and deploy from up there. I just can't imagine there will be too many times when it will be too rough to deploy the outriggers. I am taking special care to insure the stability of the mounts as well as the supporting structure.
