I found a $1900msrp Garmin gmr 24 radar dome on sale for $1,000 at a marine store. Very tempting but I wonder what else I have to buy to get this installed. I assume the gmr 24 would connect directly to the available ports on my Garmin 4212. Then I need some sort of mounting bracket? Anything else? Is this $900 savings going to cost me $2,000 when it's said and done?

By the way, in reading the install instructions, it says something about not having other antenna's with 78" of the radar dome

What would I do with the GPS17 antenna, the VHF antenna, the XM radio antenna? I think I am misunderstanding something.

You might want to call Jim Maier at BOE Marine - 1-866-735-5926

Jim installed a complete Garmin setup on his Black Lab V23 demo boat which includes that radar (I believe). He would know all the parts needed to make that dome work and could tell you if there are any 'hidden costs' associated with it.

Good luck!

Good luck!

When I first equipped my boat, I took your advice and called Jim. I have purchased virtually all of my electronics from him. Good guy, great prices.
Not sure if he can match that savings but I'll give him a call.

What about the install issue? Placement near other antennas. I can't be reading that right. Any guys with radar willing to chime in?

I had a custom mount made for my radar. My gps and an led all around is on the mount. My radar works great with the vhf antenna maybe 24 inches away from the radome. I am not sure about the XM antenna. I would imagine it could take the place of my all around light
in the photos you can see the antenna laid down on top and one showing how close it really is.
Dont mind my brothers.

i think most disregard the 78" rule when outfitting, theyre more like "guidelines" anyway  the only thing ive heard is to make sure that your radar and your gps antennas are no different planes, e.g. one higher than the other. not sure that it makes a difference with VHF antennas
