Post up some shots of your fishfinder in action andthings you look for when fishing.

Below are some shots of my Garmin 3010c mated with the digital GSD22 sounder box and airmar tilted element transducer taken on Good Friday. They were taken by my guest or I would have liked to have had a shot of when we werent marking so many fish so you could see how clearly the thermocline is defined. We had a steady temp break around the 30' mark all morning we were out. As you can see, the baitfish (which were menhaden, aka bunker) were all above the temp break. While almost all our bite came from lures drug high in the water column my experience has led me to find that while they dont get hit as frequently, dragging baits right about the thermocline yields the biggest fish. While we didnt get any hogs on the deep lures this day, the trip prior where we had similar marks but far less bait landed a few fish around the 44"/ 40lb mark (roe laden females) on deeper running umbrellas that we tried to set in the thermocline. All the fish higher in the water column tended to be smaller fish in the 34-39" range (and more lean males)

The frequency was set at 200k and the gain turn to fairly low in an attempt to pick up the temp breaks. Overall I have been very happy with the gsd22 sounder box and think it holds it own with some better known units. It certainly is better than the analog GSD20 I had on my old boat. I do miss the knobs on the furuno stand alone unit (FCV667) I had on a previous boat that allowed me to adjust the gain as we went along but I havent had any trouble finding marks and distinguishing what I was looking for. The weaknesses IMHO of the unit are very shallow water and the lack of knobs for instant tunability while in use.

Here are the shots from friday.. Post up what you read on yours.

Great idea for a Thread. Interesting observations and tips accompanying the photos and potential advice to those shopping for a FF>

Great Job.

These shots were taken during a SRRKC tournament in the fall of '06

Alright Mister Smarty Pants FishFactory, I knew someone would say something about the little fish pictures.

I do have a color sonar now.

I put it in that mode trying to figure out what the hay stacks were.

Actually before there were color fish finders there were also black and white televisions and dial telephones. There were also paper recorders that helped mark fish. The list could go on. What ever floats your boat go with it.

Just my $0.02 cents worth

Greg- just curious, why do you have your chartplotter zoomed in so far? Are you hiding something? :D Your location is still clear in the pictures 8) You must have those James Bond glasses with the camera built in..I've never thought of taking pictures of my displays.

Ahh the gps numbers are right there. not hiding anything. With opening day boat traffic, they wont be there sat. The screen is probably zoomed in from me meaning to adjust the gain and it being on the mapping mode. We were using the line of sight around a marker that day. I really wasnt paying attention to the gps. I could have probably just did full screen fishfinder.

i didnt take the shots of the fishfinder, the guy who fishes with me did. i most of the time dont have a camera onboard. I supply the boat, my guests supply the cameras

Sounds fair..As long as they are using digital and share :) I allways supply the boat, the beer, the gas, the camera, the ice.......etc. Thats why I never get in the pictures. Oh well thats the price we pay to play. I'll be out there Sat out of Solomons and keeping the boat in the water for the weekend. Hopefully the bite will be early and can getrdone quick. Your right about the traffic and it will get ugly in the mouth. I plan on being in my spot while it is dark and set lines as soon as I can see. I have a feeling with the projected good weather everyone capable will be out in force and the fish will get lock jaw. Good luck out there!

Good luck to you as well. I will be just south of Annapolis. If you havent seen the Annapolis area on opening day then you are missing something. it is an experience to be had!

Here is to hoping the pressure doesnt result in lock jaw. Opening day last year was my only skunk last spring.

I’ve sipped a few martinis at the Mears club house watching the madness but never been in the mix up there. 8) I generally stay south of Deal for Striper fishing. I don’t go far when the fish are here there everywhere. I focus on spots that are less crowded (if I can find one) especially opening day. I will probably cruise around the first hour before light looking at the sonar until I see a reason to set lines. Then if I find myself in a mess of boats I will move shallow near the river inlet. Most people will not fish the mouth because of the planning boat traffic. Allot of people used to setting there lines in a pattern that will not allow you to fish 25' of water. Hang a big one...I'm sure after all that catch and release you are ready to fill the cooler
