Rear hatches on 1801

I notice that water(rain) gets into both my rear jumper seat (battery hatches) on my 1999 1801 cc.
There is no gasket type material on the lid of the hatches, and I am curious if anyone experiences the same problem, and what they did/used to remedy the problem.

Are they holding a lot of water? There are two drain holes on each one which should keep them drained if the ports are clear.
