My 2003 vintage 2530 had some areas on the bracket where paint was chipping so I decided to do something about it. :D

I e-mailed Armstrong via their website over the winter to find out what paint they used for Parkers and where I could get it. I included my address in the initial e-mail and a few weeks later some paint shows up with directions of a 3 to 1 mix. No other directions, contact name or mention of what it is. (Smells like Awlgrip)

So today I wet sanded the bracket past the corrosion, cleaned it up and taped it off and brushed it on.

Not bad for the first coat, have a few runs. I'll sand those out and apply the final coat. Splash next week.

FYI, untreated aluminum is one of the fastest 'corroding' metals going, even if you can see if visibly occur. It's always best to acid-etch bare aluminum with a zinc chromate acid-etching primer, if even just the znChr spray paint. Then apply your topcoat. Bare aluminum should be etched/painted within minutes of the final solvent wash before any application.

Looks like a great job!

I recently had to go through the painful process of stripping the paint from my bracket because the PO had painted it with copper bottom paint. Even though there was no evidence of corrosion, I became really paranoid about putting the boat in the water for the summer. I used chemical stripper (aircraft paint remover) and then re-painted with zinc chromate primer and Trilux bottom paint for metals over the primer coat.

The result is dull, flat-looking and unprofessional (it was very windy when I applied the spray paint, but in a hurry, of course). But now I'm less worried about corrosion.

Wasn't the aluminum acid etched when it was originally painted? How often is it necessary...before every painting?

My 40 year old outdrive is a mess of crud and pitting. It cleaned up pretty well with a soda blast. I'm just gonna paint it with about 4 coats of rattle can paint, no primer or etch.

It's trailerable, so I can keep an eye on things. I'll let y'all know how things go.
