..as for 80w i would only mount them on chair rods and fight the fish out of rod holders for giant fishin like you said evrything other than gaints you can use 50w and lighter stuff
imo.. there is no reson to own 30w anymore wit all the newer stuff out there it smaller lighter and just as good as a 30w

So true...50w can handle anything ...well not anything .... but 'enough'

Like what cuz im looking into some 30w's right now.

Pelagic 2530,

How do those squid stencils work out?

Looks like a great idea.

Mike

Mike, to be honest, with the price of fuel, the $h!tty weather and my change of location over the time since we put them on, we havent had a chance to do too many offshore trips. I will say that the ones we have been on, we've caught fish; ill leave it up to you to decide whether that was our skill or the squid!! the bottom needs to be repainted this year, and they'll be going back on, if that means anything. cant imagine it hurts to have 'em there!

pelagic2530,
That’s a really interesting idea you got going there. I have to say I’ve never seen anything like that out here before. What type of paint did you apply them with? Just normal spray paint or bottom paint? It’s really a great, cheep concept. I’ve been told that fish view the bottom of the hull as a school of fish so it might be interesting to use a different stencil like a 15lb tuna shape and try to get others to approach the boat and find the baits. Might just have to do this. Thanks for the idea.
Steve

as others have said, I would skip the 30's and go right with 50's. They will handle 90% of what you are after. A buddy of mine runs two bent rod 80's and two straight rod 50's. I ask him what the 80's are for and he says they're for the really big fish. Haven't figure out how the big fish know not to hit the 50's!!!

Not sure if it was mentioned, but don't skimp on the your gaff, tailrope or harpoon. You need good, solid equipment. Will prevent the heartache of getting the fish close to the boat and then losing it as it breaks free on the engine or even the chine of your boat while messing with crappy gear!

TheGame, yes I did, thank you very much.

I also received i PM from Pelagic as well.

Thank you both for confirming what I thought I already knew.

Looking for advice on some poles, just purchased some Shimano 50w's. I guess the cost is what separates the different options?
Rollers the way to go?

definitely go rollers. i will say this: i have nice rods, and i have cheap rods (Ticas). while i admittedly like fishing the nicer rods more, and while they most definitely have nicer, beefier components, the cheap rods have held up to the abuse we've put them through just fine. my theory is, im gonna go with them until one lets me down, and then i'll upgrade the lot. whatever you choose, MAKE SURE you get slickbutts, or an aftco unibutt, or something that ISNT FOAM on the part that sits in the rodholder. that is my biggest pet peeve with my cheap rods, they are hard as HELL to get out of the holder under strain because the wet foam grips the plastic rodholder insert. other than that, things to look for are quality in the wrappings that hold the guides on, brand name rollers (Aftco, Fuji, etc), a nice big tip roller and a good reel seat. in reality, trolling sticks dont differ a huge amount in quality based on price, other than the quality of the components, until you hit the custom made rods that are going to cost you quite the pretty penny. my $.02, im sure someone else will chime in with theirs.
