More important, I rinse my truck after every trip!! After cleaning, I completely cover it in 40 cans of WD40.

Finally a sense of humor :)

How would you guys suggest cleaning off the "gunk" from a previously sprayed powerhead? One of my new-to-me engines has some sort of red lube/grease sprayed on a bunch of things. It's messy and looks like crap. The other engine hasn't been touched and it looks just as good. So, I would like to clean the one up.

I know WD-40 and small toothbrush will do it, but that's so dang tedious....

That "gunk" is a corrosion protectant. Before you go cleaning that off, consider using it on the other engine.

the only salt i ever see under the engine cowl on my f250 are salt crystals in the bottom of the engine pan which will eventually flush out the drain port in the bottom of the pan.

i suppose the salt gets in through the latch handle areas or the drains and drips down into the pan. nothing to worry about. i use either corrosion block or WD40 once a year or so to spray everything down. at that time the crystals flush out.

now, if you want to clean the engine under the hood of your truck and make it look new, then use 409. been using it for years. let the engine cool down a bit, then spray EVERYTHING liberally with 409. use the whole bottle. Let sit for about 10 minutes. spray the engine compartment down with a light spray from a garden hose nozzle. Hoses and everything else looks great.

I can agree with all of you on spraying with WD/CRC or not spraying. I feel its most important to pull the top off and look past the grime and check hose clamps, fittings, plugs, nuts and bolts. A regular good look around the engine could prevent a lousy day on the water. Then if you feel you need to do more thats up to you.
