Went fishing for Salmon yesterday and going out engine was fine. We trolled for 2-3 hours engine ran fine. Coming in we were cruising along the engine dies. We were able to start it a couple of time and run it for 10 mins then it happened again. Second and third time it wouldn’t start (just crank over). Waited 10 minutes then it started. We were able to limp in which took 30 mins strait and it didn’t die at all. Weird day. Any thoughts? We were thinking vapor lock? We have a 2004 Yamaha on a 2120 Pilothouse 1000 hours. ***Something else to note we replaced the fuel sensor and had the whole exposed for 3-5 days** Maybe water got in? Any thoughts would be great.

Sounds like maybe you got some air in the fuel system. Did you fill up the fuel filter before you installed it? Or maybe it is full of water if you did not replace it.

I had similar symptoms in a previous boat and it was the fuel filter. When it only needed a little fuel (idle or low RPM) it would run. Also, if I waited and the mess settled in the bottom of the filter it would start and run for a short period. Have you changed the screw on filter?

Actually went out today. And in about 15 minutes it started again. We would squeeze the primer ball and it would fire back up?? Someone said maybe the high pressure fuel pump? Also alot of crap in the filter both water catch and srew on. Any suggestions on how to clean the fuel tank out.

Easiest way (for you) is to have a commercial service 'polish' your fuel.

They will come in and vacuum all your fuel (and debris) out of the tank, run it through their filtering system removing the trash and the water, and return the clean fuel to your tank.

Or... you could have the fuel and trash vacuumed and disposed of, then replaced with known clean fuel.

Edit: It appears that great minds think alike (one minute apart). :)
