I started the boat up today wirh new fuel filters…I primed the water fuel separator with sea foam and it smoked a lot. …

Notice milky substance from exhaust is this just exhaust? I ran a fogging mix through the engine before I stored it.

I ran the motor some more today on the muffs and notice more oil so starting to think it’s not just fogging oil burning off

I think I figured it out but does this make sense.

A buddy told me to smell the residue and see if it smells like gear oil which it didn’t. I had an open bottle of gear oil and smelled both side my side.

Before I ran the motor, I greased the prop with 24c mercury grease

It smells exactly like it. I also greased all my fittings as well with the same grease

Left finger is the 24c and right finger is the sludge from the floor

Is it possible the grease is bad? I looked on my Amazon it’s 5 years old….

I had a a similar issue last season with a small mercury outboard that I use on a RIB
Fluid leaking from the prop area Dissembled the prop shaft housing and there was about 10 yards of braid wrapped up in the housing It damaged the oil seal
I replaced the oil seal and bearings All good after the repair

Weird part is I ran the engine on muffs extensively at the end of the year and didn’t see any of this.

This hapoened after I pull the prop off to inspect and regrese.

I am thinking that it is the grease on the prop maybe

FWIW grease doesn't have a shelf life. It will "bleed" a small amount of oil over time but that is what a grease is supposed to do. If it is milky my guess is it is an oil / water emulsion. I would pull the prop and verify the shaft seal is not damaged to eliminate that as a cause.

Ok i am going to have a mobile mechanic come and pressure test the lower unit.

Ok Yamaha certified tech came to the house. No leaks it was the fogging oil.

He drained the lowe unit oil and it was clean, he pressure tested the lower unit and it was fine, and then he told me this is fogging oil. He also dropped the lower unit and looked around.

He told me even though the manual says to use a fogging mixture that it’s not necessary. It was only recently said to do that. Yamaha likes to sell stuff.

I am going to put fresh oil in tbe lower unit and run it with the muffs today at 2k rpm for 15-20 minutes until it clears up.

$120 for piece of mind not bad and I got to watch

Honestly, if a certified mechanic came to your house, dropped the lower unit, inspected it, pressure tested, and only charged you $120, you are the winner today. Keep his number in your cell because he was extremely fair with his pricing

Yes he will get my business……

I put oil in lower unit before and ran it no more oil on the ground……

One thing he did mention to me is that the rust/corrosion inside the engine is concerning. He said the spine for lower unit should be clean.

It’s a 2021, I have a 5 year warranty. Should I seek out the dealer?

Sometimes the crush washers are reused and leak over time. Good idea to replace each time screws are removed. Fwiw

If and when I spray fogging oil in a motor, I just remove the plugs , spray and turn over a couple times. Emptied the VST is a good idea.
