Trailer Diagnosis

Haven't really had time to even take a better look at this, but something obviously bad has happened to my trailer.

This happened on the way to the boat ramp this afternoon - which is approx 3 miles from my house and in which time I never go > 35 mph.

Anyone know what happened and what the diagnosis/repair might be?

Showing the back side just to ID what type of axle is involved - torsion?

Glad the boat got in the water safely, so have some time to work this out.

From the looks of thing, you had a stiff bearing (not frozen but almost). It did not freeze up on the 3 mile drive but got extremely hot, you dunked it in cold water, the casting cracked.
That is a standard leaf spring drop axle, with Kodiak disk brakes.

Any idea what is required to fix? Do I need to replace the entire axle or ??

Not sure how these things go together. The trailer is 13+ years old, and I replaced all 4 sets of wheels/tires/bearings and installed the Kodiak brakes about 5 years ago.

It looks like you need a hub and bearing set like these

other sources are available
Removing it should be not difficult
After it is removed you can inspect the spindle for damage

On the other wheels repack bearings and spindles
Buy a pack of disposable gloves and rags

It might be faster to block up the entire trailer, pull all tires then inspect each wheel and brake assembly and make a parts list.
If the brake fluid has not been changed in a while,drain, replace and bleed the system

Thanks guys, I couldn't remember if hubs and axle were integrated or not. If that's what it is, I can fix it myself -- fingers crossed. Ill dig into it when I get some down time and see how it comes apart.

No....You have leaf springs.

Post a pix of the axle next to it. I want to see the wheel side. Not the backside.

Got some time to dig into this a little more.

I originally thought I would just be able to replace the integrated hub/rotor, but it looks like the axle spindle has been significantly damaged.

I'm afraid to ask, but I'm assuming at this point I need to replace the axle?

I would ask a repair shop. A new spindle is an option and dont know if a speedi sleeve would work

I'd bring it to Howie Tolman at Tolman's Auto right off Rt 1 south of the courthouse.

Howie's a boater and crackerjack mechanic ... he could advise you best!
