Ho many hours should one last? Have 1500 hrs and they tell me it needs a complete rebuild, 11000.00 dollars Thanks for your input

1500 is about where a GM block might start to need some refreshing, depends on how it was run, upkeep and that all encompassing engineering principle, luck.
$11k sounds a bit high for a rebuild to me. A new crate motor can be had for between $3000 (naked) to $7.5K (W/accessories) and installation should take a good mech and helper less than a full day if there are no complications, so make sure what your getting.

Whatever you do, stay away from people selling "Refurbished" motors. Refurbished is from the Latin root, meaning "Spray Painted"

diverdude... are you asking about the motor, or the outdrive?

I'll wager that you are talking about the outdrive and the engine. Our outdrive lasted 8000 hours+, but it was pretty beat when we offloaded it to NOAA. All the SS pins had eroded the aluminum around them, even though we greased them. It was pretty sloppy, but still got the job done.
Our engine was a Volvo TAMD41B, which was still going, albeit not very strong after the same amount of time. We had the injectors rebuilt about every 1K hours, and the injection pump done every 2K. The turbo was changed at 6K, and the compression was just getting worse... I think it should have been replaced pretty much when we sold it.
