Looking to buy a parker 23' with a 1998 yamaha ox66 250 hp. This is an older (12 years) motor, I haven't heard how many hours. I have questions about this motor. Does anyone here, have this motor? If so, what do you like or dislike about it? How is the fuel consumption? Reliability? Maintenace issues? Etc. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Scott

I don't have one but the consenses here is that is one of the best Yammi's made as long as it has been maintained.

I'm sure others will chime in.

I have a 1997 225 hp OX66, which is essentially the same (big block Yamaha) motor.
Bryan is correct. Many owners feel it is one of the best Yamaha ever built.

Unless there is an hour meter on the boat, there is no way to know how many hours are on her, as the motor does not store that information.
How the motor was maintained, and will be maintained is key to their longevity.

When I bought my boat in 03, the previous owner had not cared for her very well.
No fuel amendments were ever used and the O2 sensor was toast. The block was also salted up, as the motor had never seen a freshwater flush.
Even with these issues, the basic motor was sound, and all it took was a bit of TLC to bring her back to life.

These days she gets a regular diet of Penzoil full synthetic oil, and at every fill-up I add Ringfree, StarTron, and Stabil fuel stabilizer.
Ringfree and StarTron are added at the rate of 1 oz per 10 gallons of fuel. Stabil is added per the label directions.
The motor gets a freshwater flush for 20 to 30 minutes at least once a week, and gets a SaltAway treatment at least twice a season.
Fuel is filtered using a (blue) Yamaha 10 micron filter which is changed twice a season - spring commissioning and ~ Aug/Sept.

The 225 on my boat recently pushed my 2520 MVSC to 34.6 kts at WOT in flat water with all my gear, two aboard, and 1/2 tank of fuel.
Not bad for almost 8000#'s of boat, motor, and gear. :)

Thanks for the reply. I'm just starting the process of looking for a boat and have a lot to learn. I am trying to read as much as I can and ask lots of questions. I have yet to talk with the owner, I put an email into the listing agent (I guess that is what you call them) with questions about maintenance records and hours.

I see from your profile, you use the IAFF symbol. I take it you're a firefighter? I am one too, out in California. A guy a work with has a 23 parker and loves it. I hope to get one also.

Take care.

Welcome aboard brother!

I just retired with 27 years of federal service in my department, but I've been 'in the business' in many different departments since 1969.
I guess that officially makes me an 'old timer'. :D

Yes, I am an IAFF Alumi, and proud of it.

Hey Ivanhoe, I am just wrapping up the process of buying a Parker 2320EC with a '99 OX66 250 on her. I've done a lot of research on this particular motor both here and lots of other spots, and consensus is that they are great motors, and will actually tolerate abuse fairly well and still be reliable. Budget enough money to change out the fuel filters internal and external), VST filter, low pressure fuel pumps, water pump, and a set of spark plugs and you should be in pretty good shape as long as nothing else is wrong with the motor.

What part of CA are you? I'm in Santa Barbara.

I have the 1999 OX66 225 with 1000 hours on it. the only problems i have had are with the cooling system, i am the 3rd owner and i dont believe the 2nd owner ever did anything to flush. He kept it on a high dry and i think all they ever did was pull it from the water and store it. After i bought it i completely rebuilt the cooling system with the exception of the inner most water jacket. I now fulh it after every run using "Salt Away" to get rid of any salt. Other then that is has been a great engine and i have never met anyone who didnt like the Saltwater Series OX66 engines.
