I am going to be splashed in about 10 days. Once she is in, I am going to run a de-carb (Jim, I'll call you soon about that). I am also going to do a synch & link per the manual. One of the first steps is to disconnect the oil linkage rod from the upper post (not the lower post which you disconnect to adjust the linkage). My question is how to disconnect the rod from this end? I've only had to ever disconnect it from the other end.
Sorry for the crappy photos, only had my cell phone with me.

It looks like you can lift up the clip part that is part way around the rod, then rotate it up so that the rod can be pulled out of the arm. Careful so it doesn't break when you unsnap it from the rod.

Why do you need to remove the forward end? There is nothing to adjust on that end, so I'm not sure what it buys you. I'm not 100% on this, but I don't think you can remove just the forward end anyways.. I think you remove the oil control rod by removing the clip at the back end and then swinging it out and away from the engine.

The back end you just pull the cotter pin, remove the plastic washer and pop the clip off. That will free up the oil pump control lever. Once you pop off the throttle link (6 clips on the starboard side) the throttle valves will be able to close fully, and you can adjust the clearance on the oil pump control lever.

Measure the TPS with the throttles fully closed.. adjust as needed, and verify the proper clearance on the oil rod. Also, while you are hooked up, make sure that as you adjust the throttle, the TPS gives you a nice gradual change in voltages and you don't get any sticky spots where it jumps around.

I wouldn't try to do any other adjustments on the idle speed, the throttle lever cam, etc.. unless you are having problems that can't be fixed with the simple synch and link.

Hi Tom,

I am going to do a synch and link once I go in probably less than 2 weeks from now. I have both manuals (Clymer and Yamaha). One of the first steps in the Clymer says to disconnect this oil linkage rod from the upper post (it even has a photo of it with an arrow pointing to that plastic coupler thingy). It's on Page # 155 if you have one. That didn't sound right to me and it's not mentioned in the Yam manual. My oil linkage rod is adjusted properly so I think I'll leave it alone for now.

Thanks,
Tim
