So I am in negotiations to buy a 2007 2820 xl with 2006 Yamaha F-250 4strokes. The boat is currently at a local yamaha certified dealer having the engines inspected. Two things have come up so far. One is that both motors have had their powerheads replaced. The dealer said this is unusual for a yamaha 250. Second the starboard engine is "making oil" The seller has agreed to pay for the repairs and the dealer will sea trial and test the engine after repairs are made. What do the experts on here thing about the longevity of these engines. Would you buy them? Oh and btw the port powerhead has 348hours and the starboard 44.

Run Forrest, run ...

Setup wrong ... I'm betting too steep a prop, set too deep, and ran the s$#t out of them ... which led to blown powerheads. Making oil on 4-strokes is either motors running cold (faulty t-stats) or engines that were 'babied' (which doesn't make sense ... :? given the issues) and the rings were never set correctly during break-in.

Sounds like the previous owner knew nothing of motors and just ran it. From what you tell us thru cyber-space ... run Forrest, run ... !

Those motors, which aren't 250hp without high octane fuel anyway, have more issues than a weekly periodical ...
 
I'm with dale, unless your getting a great deal and knowing the conditions of those engs. doesn't make a difference to you. 250's are bullet proof, I have a pair myself. I also run a few other boats with twin yamaha 250's, one pair is going to hit 7000 hrs (seven thousand) and we run the S... Out of them. So to have a power head replaced with those hours, something was way wrong. If the owner treated the motors like S,@?, how did he treat the boat..

"Wow one response" dude it's the weekend everyone is out on their Parker's fishing, diving and cruising around. Give it a few days, they will come, this is CP :lol:
 
could it be the corrosion problem yamaha had with the f-225/250's ? I think the problem was corrected when your engine came out in 06.
 
I've seen these failures many times. They can keep those big Yamahas. p-tooey!
 
So the yard is telling me that both powerheads were replaced in 2010 and after replacing the faulty thermostat the starboard engine is ok. both engines test "like new" and are under factory warranty until nov 28 2014. I was kind of hoping for some bad news so my decision would be more cut and dry???

Buying a used boat is never a cut and dry decision. How does the remainder of the boat look? Does it look abused? That is a great boat and those are usually good motors. As others have said for two to be lemons on the SAME boat it is highly unlikely. If you think the repairs have recovered from whatever abuse caused both to need those repairs and it is within the dollar amount that you are willing to take a chance, then go for it.

Everyone is telling you that the engine situation is suspicious. We can only say what we would do. The "yard" might have an interest in selling it, I can't tell, but if it were me I would have a complete inspection of boat and engine done by an independent mechanic. That would include all items on the boat, structure and engines.

Good luck. This could be a good deal in disguise.

At the end of the day it's your money, not ours. I can tell you the 28 is a great boat/tank. Getting an independent inspection, like LUV2FISH said, is your best bet. Then just offer them what you think is a far price. I got my 28 for way less then the asking price and everyone came out smiling. I have yamaha's and have all but good things to say about them. Now a days all brand motors are great motors I think. At my boating club there are all kinds of motors brands and you really don't hear anyone saying their motors suck.
 
Did anyone checkout to see what the maximum RPMs are and if the OBs are mounted at the right height???????

Here's how I see it ... let's assume those are 6,000 maximum or wide-open throttle (WOT) RPM motors. Let's say the previous owner, as setup by the dealer, put on TOO steep a pitch prop on BOTH motors and he only turned 5300 RPMs at maximum. Note a twin-OB boat should NEVER turn less than 200 RPMs off the rated maximum! Did I say 'never' :?: ? Sorry, I mean to say NEVER!

So let's continue with 'my' theory ... the props were too big, the motors were lugging, and possible the motors are mounted too deep. This required the previous owner to wind the s%$t out of them and one factoid of OB motors is that less not running any oil ... lugging an OB motor is THE fastest way to kill an OB there is!

So ... given all that ... what, if anything less new powerheads, has changed :?: ?

What do the motors turn @ WOT, with 1/3rd to 1/2 fuel, all typical gear carried, and 2 people on board?

If the motors aren't setup right ... those newer powerheads may also soon be doomed to fail ...
