Hi everyone, I just got a new 21 se and am going to be installing transom mount transducers for a lowrance hds unit with side scan. I was wondering about mounting the regular transducer on the stepped transom as well as installing the structure scan underneath the step, has anyone done this?

I wasn't sure if it would be optimal to place the main transducer on the back of the step or wether underneath on the transom would be better. Thoughts?

Also has anyone tried a no-drill install of the lss-2 ducer underneath the step?

Thanks in advance. I don't have any pics at the moment but there appears to be enough room under the step to mount the lss-2 module.

Thanks.

Without pics its a little difficult to give advice but in your installation manual they do show it can be mounted under a step, although they are not the clearest instructions. I just installed that setup on my 2520. one thing they don't tell you is not to mount any other transducers lower than the LSS-2, since it is a side scanning transducer it will pick up anything that is in its side view and create a dark spot and interference on you picture. I found out the hard way. Good luck Mike

Have some mock up drawings to update the thread. If anyone sees an issue with what I am trying please let me know. thanks.

That will not work.

It has to be something like this........But I'd have a thru hull X-ducer.

Although not this model, I run two transducers, one on each side of the OB engine. Works great and spreads them out nicely for reducing interference.

Thanks for the replies. Warthog, could you elaborate on why it will not work, too turbulent, out of water, etc?
Poge, I am assuming yours are mounted on a step, or no?

This past weekend, I went out and have the skimmer mounted on the step as I noted above in the diagrams, It holds a bottom signal, although I am not sure yet if it is picking up the amount of fish it should while I am running. I don't have the lss-2 installed yet, I am still pondering and waiting for a possible mounting block.

I appreciate any comments as this type of hull is new to me, so I am not familiar with how it is working with the water flow. This past weekend I didn't get many opportunites to peer over the back and watch for excessive turbulence or air bubbles.

It will not work because it is not down there on the bottom surface of the hull receiving clean water. Where you want to mount it is to high and the hull pushes water up along with bubbles.....Bubbles are your enemy across the face of a X-ducer.

Did you look at Fig 1 in that link?

You also show....[no dimensions] The units way out beside the Trim Tab. Look at Fig. 2.

Bubbles are the enemy of a transducer.
They need to be in as clean a water path as possible.

I run an Airmar through-hull transducer, and the only time I loose bottom is when the boat is in reverse and the prop is pushing bubbled water under the hull.
When running, I never loose bottom even at WOT.
