I am getting my electronics set up this weekend and have chosen a Airmar B60 12 degree through-hull transducer to pair with my Garmin 740S. I have read several places that the thru- hull should be put on the starboard side of the hull for the best returns. I have a really nice spot on the port side of the keel in the bilge that look perfect for such a project. Can anyone give me some guidance on if this is the best location? Is the hull cored in this area?

Interested in what you end up doing since I am considering upgrading to a thru-hull transducer as well.

I think you want to stay away from that pick-up on the port side since it will create turbulence...... cleaner water on the starboard side for better returns from your transducer.

LOL....I can't even tell. I have a 27in monitor and the pix's are blowing my screen out.

IE: can''t see the whole pix without wiggling it around....That makes it really hard to tell anything.

It will work on the port side, but I've even moved stuff to keep them on the STB side.

I've put at least a dozen B-60's / B-164's in now.

Did you note what I did to the battery tray in mine? It is a solid fiberglass shelf. No wood.

I'd use a LARGE hole saw like 5in to cut a hole thru the shelf. Then go thru the hull with the 2 3/8in in the center of that thru the hull.

This would be behind the battery trays. Don't forget......The arrow points at the KEEL.

I had to cut a large area out of the shelf for the M265LH Xducer. But I'm talking in the same general area.

Yes I Love that Big A$$ NASA hatch. :)

I'll be installing a thru-hull in my 2320 before long. Will a standard cordless drill do the job or do I need something more heavy duty? I'm looking at B164 or SS264W so the hole will be 3.75".

I use my 18V Dewalt all the time. You drill a pilot hole from the inside, This is to make sure your not to close to something like a stringer.

'cause you can't tell from the outside.

Then I drill the hole with the holesaw from the outside making sure the holesaw is square to the hull.

FYI....I've never used that big rubber gasket that comes with the X-ducers. However....If the inside of the hull is not smooth [and most aren't] I use a grinder with a 36gt soft disc to smooth it out. It doesn't take much.

Dang! Thank you for the lesson Brent. I'm always ready to learn something new. :)

That helped a LOT.

Alright everyone, we ended up putting the ducer on the starboard side opposite the pick-up for the baitwell. I also installed a Garmin 740S, an Icom 412, Vhf Antenna, spreader lights, and an anchor light on the t-top as it didn't have one . It took me and my son all day Saturday, but we got it all done in one day.

The Airmar B60 was one of the best upgrades I did to my Parker 2520DV. ( I have a Raymarine C120 MFD)

It also is on the starboard side, about 1' from the stern.

I get reading at all cruise speeds !!

Well worth the $$$.
