Attractive ideas to fill shifter opening- Diamond plate? Wood?

My replacement top mounted shifter has a much smaller footprint than the original. What would be a nice looking way to hide the oversized opening?

Anyone have example pics?

A piece of starboard? add usb and cigarette charger port or hand-held vhf radio mount, ram mount for phone or iPad

Glass in a piece of core, gelcoat and then cut the proper size hole.

The only problem with glassing it in to redo it is, filling all the wiring componets and whole inside of pilothouse with fiberglass dust from grinding.
