Blowing 15-17 e-ne 4 foot waves every 4 seconds.
Choppy in the blue water (gulf stream).
My buddy bailed on me at the last moment so it was a solo effort.
Tide was slack at the inlet making an easy start.
I fired up the stereo & headed into it at 16 knots. Put out my high speed rig at 10 fathoms on the color change. No bites
Set out in 20 fathoms & had a wahoo bite off in 15 minutes. lots of boats fishing around me so i headed to the eastern.
no bites for a long time then had a couple of blackfins (squid chain & moldcraft) hit the flatlines. too small. throwbacks.
made the 280 line in 40 fathoms (had a blue one on a few days previous up there & wanted to find him again) with no more action & then headed south into the deep.
found a decent school blackfins & boxed 1 keeper size (10#) for sashimi. not much in the deep so i headed back toward diamond shoals tower.
Got into the 20-30 fathom water around the 230-240 and it was on. WAHOO !.
Hung one on a purple & black eyecatcher (2 bite offs previous). He fit in the box.
Then one hit the blue & white sea star (mono rig)& almost got my favorite lure. Cut off the hook but got the lure back. He was gone.
Another one made a big mistake when he hit a long blue chugger/bally rig. He wouldn't fit in the box so out came the bag.
Reckon he was 30-35#.
Few minutes later got another one on a red & black chugger/bally. Decent fish. Threw him back as I had two already.
First time I ever threw back a wahoo.
When I got shallow near the change the oceanic bonito slaughtered my spread. Went back to the deep. Had a few more biteoffs.
Never found mr. blue marlin. no complaints.
Ran out of bait (had 2 twelve packs) & headed back in. Pretty good day.

Things I learned.
Fishing 4-5 lines solo is tough when you get covered up.
If you're fishing solo keep the wire short. I had the big wahoo on a 10' wire & the end game (angling/wiring/gaffing) was exciting.
Stay in a happy place.

Catch 'em up.

I was out there saturday too. I wasnt quite as lucky as you fishing wise and it did get pretty bad. I didn't get out as far as the guy I was fishing with in his boat got out 10 miles and decided it was rough enough for him and didn't want to go any further. We didn't have much luck but heard from the guys at the marina they did pretty well with dolphin between 20 and 25 miles out. It was my first time going offshore and I loved every minute in my parker. Much dryer ride than his Sea Pro. The 4 of us had a good time while the 4 on his boat got soaked. At least it was a warm sunny day.

Man I wish we had driven a little further south and offramped at Hatteras. we went out of Oregon inlet and went 20-22 miles SE and trolled for 5 hours and we got 3 countem three bailer dolphins. Came back in or should I say beat back in and got five miles from OI and we jigged for some jacks and BAM there were a school of bailers so we played with the jacks and also got 5 more dolphins. Sounds like following you would have been more productive. Were do you put off at and what do they charge.

Oregon Inlet is a great place to go billfishing this time of year.
Generally the direction is NE from the sea buoy and the runs can be 40-50 miles.
More than I want in a 25 foot boat.
I fished a 55' Paul Mann boat a month ago out of Oregon Inlet and we waxed the marlin.
8 of 12 on whites and 2 for 2 on blues. a million bailers for fish tacos.
lots of flags at the dock. a day to remember.

I live on the island & normally fish out of Hatteras Inlet. I slip my boat at one of the local marinas from May-November. Normally I run 10-20 miles offshore before setting out. I'm not much of a soundside fisherman.
I fish the pretty days & stay tied up at the dock when it blows more than 15knots.
I'd rather catch a blue marlin than just about anything else.

Teach's Lair & Village Marina in Hatteras both have ramps. I reckon it must be $10 to drop your boat in.

Catching and boating and releasing all those fish on your own - you da man, mr G! Hope Earl just washes your windows and waters ur lawn.
