I generally leave my spin casters in the v-berth, but my trolling gear stays in the garage until I use them.
Trouble is, I have a Cherokee Classic and transporting any rods inside the Jeep can be a challange.

I recently purchased one of those carriers that fits in the 2" receiver, that is used to transport coolers and bulky items.
My plan was to fabricate rod holders across the back of the carrier using plywood, u-bolts (to make it removable and store-able), and PVC pipe for the rods.
Years ago, before I owned a boat, I used to use a rig like this on the front of my IH Scout II for surf fishing the beaches of Assateague Island and the DE shore.

Before I got too far into this project, I figured I'd ask the CP members who don't have an open pickup bed, how do you transport your rods?

If I go forward with the plans already in my head, I'll post the results to the 'Projects' board in case anyone else would like to duplicate or improve on my project.

I built a rod holder for the bed of my Chevy Colorado this past spring, I just took a 2x12 cut it to size to fit into the notches of my bed and it slides in and out, then i took to ABS pipe cut it and screwed it to the board, works great, my rods and truck where getting all scratched and beat up from laying in the bed of my truck i will snap a pic and post it.

im an idiot didnt read your post well enough, didnt realize it said "who dont have an open back truck" my fault!

No, that's fine. I'd still like to see what you did.

I just picked up some horizontal holders at wal-mart.Think they were made by Berkely and had nice secure foam displacement holders that seem quite secure.I would look at that and see if you couldn't rig up something using your existing roof rack.Perhaps a removable board with the holders mounted to it?

I use these in the back of my Pathfinder:

They come with the hardware to mount them a bunch of different ways.

I have removed the strap from the aft supports and mount them so the openings are on the top and the rods are just held in place by gravity.

I have an Explorer and used plastic rod holders that had a cut out to lock the rod butt and reel upright and use zip ties to fasten to roof rack, fast, cheap, and works.

You know the back seat of that Jeep folds down, right? :)

Still too short.

FWIW... Fabrication of the new carrier is almost complete.
It will handle 10 rods.

Now that fabrication is complete, I need to blow it apart for paint.
Photos soon.
