My 2110 has a 150 hpdi. I am experiencing some engine sputter in the area of 3000-3300 and it smooths out at higher rpm. It seems to hunt around for a happy spot on its own. No problems at WOT. Any suggestions? I had thoughts of vst filters or a coil breaking down. Any opinions? Thank you in advance.

I would think VST would also affect high speed too.

But keep in mind those RPMs where you are seeing the issue is commonly a speed between low speeds and higher pushing-up-to-place cruising speeds, like where timing changes occur, high speed jets open up, manifolds or variable XX open/close, etc., so it could very well be another issue too.

Sounds to me like a fuel-caused stutter ... and on a direct-injected motor like you have, this is also where the fuel delivery goes through the transition stage from stratified to homogeneous combustion ... but now to isolate the culprit.

Sorry I don't have more ... maybe send an email to Andy at SIM?

Heard back from Andy at SIM. He suggested changing the VST filters, the med pressure filters, cleaning the O2 sensor, and the low pressure pumps. All the preventative stuff. I'll keep you posted.

Well the engine is performing a lot better now. The mechanic changed the VST filter and it doesn't have much of the sputter left. The filter wasn't to bad but it was good either. The other parts weren't available so I will be changing the pumps and intermediate filter after I get back from vacation. They don't look that bad. I read a great DIY on the hull truth. I will try to open up the metal filter and post some picks. Enjoy the 4th of July everybody. God Bless America.

All of the filters changed and the motor is running really good now. I cut the metal filter open and found that the paper was starting to break down. When I get a chance I will be going after the HP basket filters.

Sorry for the late update on my motor. The hp basket filters didn't solve anything. The low pressure pumps were the problem. I also changed oil to Pennzoil to get rid of the carbon build up.

Nice work fixing the problem.
Do you use Ringfree, or Star*Tron?
Fuel amendments can keep your combustion chambers (and rings) free of carbon buildup.

Out of curiosity, what type of oil were you running before Pennzoil?

Double check the plugs they specify, the required ones for HPDIs changed a lot in the years they were built.

If you want to get really adventurous, you can run a higher heat plug...NGK makes this really easy to do with their part numbers.
