I would think VST would also affect high speed too.
But keep in mind those RPMs where you are seeing the issue is commonly a speed between low speeds and higher pushing-up-to-place cruising speeds, like where timing changes occur, high speed jets open up, manifolds or variable XX open/close, etc., so it could very well be another issue too.
Sounds to me like a fuel-caused stutter ... and on a direct-injected motor like you have, this is also where the fuel delivery goes through the transition stage from stratified to homogeneous combustion ... but now to isolate the culprit.
