I have a 200 Mercury needing new prop shaft seals. In the past on other engines I was able to use a punch and hammer to unscrew the bearing carrier to get to the seals; however, this one is stuck. I do not have the Quicksilver tool to unscrew it with a ratchet. Any suggestions or advice on getting this thing apart?

I don't know how the merc is setup but I did the seals on my old Johnson Ocean Pro and had to use a puller off bolts threaded into the housing to pull it out, other than that, I can't help.

My old Evinrude OP 225 was fairly easy too...this engine has a threaded bearing carrier that must be unscrewed and needless to say saltwater may have had its way with it

Do you mean the seals themselves? I have read of others doing this and guarding the shaft with a piece of aluminum can. I tell you, that thought has crossed my mind, I just don't want to be in a worse shape than now.

You are correct, the bearing is behind 2 seals and it appears that with the right amount of finesse you could remove both of them without damaging anything. It is just not the preferred method of removal

No, it is a large 4" diameter socket like tool to remove the nut that holds the gear case together. Behind that nut is the carrier which an be removed with a wheel puller
