I want to upgrade my thru hull's on my 23SE to either stainless or chrome over bronze. The problem is, because of limited room, one of the thru hull's needs to have a 90 degree bend in it. Does anyone have a source for these? What did others do with the same problem?

If over the waterline, I personally would go with SS ones. Gemlux makes SS ones 5/8" through 1.5" in a 90-degree fitting, but their site seems to be down ... www.gemlux.com

Some have complained that the body diameter of these SS ones is somewhat smaller than the thru-hull you're replacing. But I didn't find it an issue, as I know (since I did the install myself) that I had a good sealing surface/interface and that it bonded well. I used 3M 4200 for this install.

I don't think an O-Ring will do it per se. Examplw - SS is sooooooo much harder than plastic that for, say a 1" ID (inside-diameter) thru-hull, the OD (outside diameter) for a SS version could be 1.25" or 1/8" walls, but for plastic versions the walls woulde be 1/4" each or OD of 1.5".

I just 'centered' the SS thru-hull on the existing cut-out by wrapping the SS OD with blue tape, so it mimic'd the OD of a cheap plastic thru-hull.

Matt
post some pics of this!
I need some more 23SE porn!

The Perko chrome over bronze I put on my old Grady fit the existing holes perfectly. But I've also heard there are SS ones that fit too.

For the 90-degree elbow, I found bronze ones at my local Boater's World.

Will do. I ordered two of them from GemLux almost a week ago. Nothinh yet. Postage was almost $12.00 so I think for that price someone is walking them up here to Massachusetts to deliver them in hand. I have several projects either started or waiting to go once this frigging rain stops.

Well the delivery came from Gemlux and the thru hull with the 90 degree bend definatley will not work. The thing is huge! So i'll resume my search this weekend. If no luck, I'll be installing the plastic ones that originally came with the boat.

Matt,

How is the quest going ? I want to replace the same thru hull (bilge ?) on my 23se with SS. Keep us posted ...

I just put them in this morning and I'll attach the hoses when this frigging rain stops!! I ordered the correct ones through GemLux as suggested. They are SS, 1-1/8 barbed.

I used model #71004 for my backup or second bilge pump.

My factory bilge came with a plastic thru hull with a 90 degree bend. All of the ones I ordered were wrong, too big, or it did not match the other one. So I ordered a short or stubby version and bought a bilge hose a foot longer. All of this game me the extra room needed to make the connection. The stubby one is model #72004.

I'll add a few pictures this afternoon.

Here they are. Sorry for the clarity though. It rained all frigging day here! I also finally got around to double clamping all of my lines.

Nicely done.

New thru-hulls are still a bit down on my "to-do" list. Next task is to do some gelcoat work on the stem, just above the bow-eye. Seems the bow roller hammered it when I went over a big dip in the road, and knocked off about a 1"x2" chunk of gelcoat, exposing the raw dark glass underneath.

Matt,

Thanks for the good info.

How did they end up fitting? Loose? (did you use Dales idea of the tape (if it was?)??

Also - how did you remove the original plastic ones?

Thanks!
wicho..

They fit great. They were the same size as the plastic thru hulls I took out. So I cleaned up the holes, gooped them up and installed them.

The factory thru hull's were starting to discolor and turn yellow. I wanted to dress up the boat a little bit so I went with the stainless steel ones. The old thru hull's came out easily and I threw them out when I was done.
