I am going to buy backup handheld VHF and GPS units. Which ones deliver the goods but don't break the bank. I would want the GPS to have map data.

Garmin has the 78 series out now. The 76 Series are tried and true.

Don't get a 76 Black and White. Get the 76Cx. It's color and the batteries last longer. This is a GPS designed for marine use.

Your looking at about the $150 mark.

Not sure why anyone would buy a hand held stand alone GPS today. Any smartphone can get that job done, with NOAA or Navionics charts. My tablet goes with me on the boat and using downloaded charts I can navigate even without a cell signal.

Might have a look at one of these if you want a combo unit?

I've seen them advertised for a little over $200.

I second the 76 CSx. I use it for hunting, fishing, kayaking and hiking. I even have a friend that uses it to fly his small plane. They are a very durable unit.

I did have one problem with mine. One of the tit's in the battery bank broke. I set it back to Garmin. $50 fee to repair it.
