If merc would make the Optimax quieter, that would be my motor of choice! My optimax was a great motor with ZERO issues.

Which end for the Merc ?

I don't like to slam any brand because they can all have problems depending on how they are treated.

Having said that, my department operates a pair of Parker 21SE's as rescue boats in the upper Bay.
One of them has a Yamaha 150 SWSII on it, the other has a 225 Merc Saltwater Series.
Both boats get run hard by a number of operators so they don't get the sort of loving care most of us give our personal boats.

The Yamaha motor has never missed a beat since new in 1999.
The Merc... is always in the shop (and it is there right now).
The prognosis for the motor is not good - it might be toast.
The repair estimate will determine if it gets fixed or not.

The consensus is that the Merc should be replaced... by a 4-stroke Yamaha 150.

Again... not bashing. Just relaying personal, real-world experience.

The ads all keep saying this is a "bass boat" motor.
Is this a freshwater only motor... and is there a saltwater version in the offering at some point?

Thats what I'm wondering. A 4S 300 HP V6 for the saltwater community. Otherwise, If I were to upgrade today, I'd be going with the Zuke 300. The Yamaha 8 cylinders are a little to heavy for my bracket. I looked on the Yamaha web site and couldn't find anything.

If I had to do it today (and I do not wish that on myself), I'd lean heavily towards the Etec.
I hope that Yamaha does develop a saltwater motor of this caliber though.
That would probably change my mind. 8)

Yamaha updated its web site. Looks like a good motor for bass boats. I'm surprised Yamaha doesn't see the need for a lighter high hp ocean going 4s.
