She really looks good Kevin. You would never guess the age of your boat looking at these pics. Stellar job on the teak also. You can see the extra effort put into it. Looking forward to the finished product shots. Good luck with the weather.

Thanks guys. :)

Back when I was working 56 hrs/wk it was tough to do this prep work on evenings and weekends, while also working around the weather.
Everything always felt like it was rushed. I've decided I'm not doing it that way anymore.
Now that I am retired, I can finally do this the way I want to do it, and not have to be in a hurry to meet a date on the calendar.

Those of you that fish the Bay know how the Rockfish population has declined over the past 10 years or so.
You also know the zoo the Bay becomes on opening day.
I have no compelling reason to want to be out there on opening day.
If the fish are there, I'll get them on a weekday after the crazies leave.

Once this boat is done to my satisfaction, she will go into my slip and be fished, but not before.
I can't afford a new one, so I've got to take care of what I have. 8)

Kev not trying to hijack your thread. But I did buy the Shurhold Buff magic over the weekend. I used it on the hull and was pleased with the results. I did a coat of that followed by 3 coats of the Colonite paste fleet wax.
I am anxious to see how it will perform around the PH as you stated this is the area that takes the most beating and needs the most attention on my boat currently.
Few pics, it was cloudy here yesterday so the pics didn't come out so great.

That is a nice shine. 8)

I'm really liking the Buff Magic product.
Right out of the jar it's like an 800 grit, but as you work it with the buffer, it gets finer and finer until it's like a 2000 grit dust.
On the trunk cabin I had to go over it twice because I let my wool pad load up too much.
Changing out the pads more often made the product work much better, and gave the best results.

I'm still not completely sold on the Polish just yet.
I want to see how it holds up this season.
Your method of using the Fleet Wax over the prepared surface sounds like a good option.
Judging from the shine, I'd say you have a winner.

Kev I found the same with the pads they do get loaded up fairly quick especially when you moisten the pad. I switched pads half way down the boat and got better results the rest of the way.
I also agree with the grit of the Shurhold product. When I bought my boat it was heavily oxidized the previous owner didn't believe in wax. So the past few years I have been using the 3M compound, but now the gel coat has been restored I didn't want to keep using that heavy grit on the gel coat anymore. This stuff provides a good alternative still providing that little bit of grit that you need but not to much.
The Colonite Fleet wax works GREAT, and holds up all season long. Its easy to work with as long as you dont try to cover to big of an area.

Got a lot done today even though the temperature never got above 46 degrees. :(

Started at the bow, and worked the 'splatter non-skid' all the way back to the beginning of the cockpit.
Worked both sides with some 3M cleaner wax that had a more aggressive cleaner in it than the Starbrite product I had been using.
Worked each side of the bow a foot or two at a time taking care not to wrap up the electrical cord, or fall off the side of the boat.

Once I was done with the bow section, I turned my attention to the washboards surrounding the cockpit.
Since the access was better, this wasn't as backbreaking or tedious as the bow sections. :)

After everything was done with the yellow wool pads, I switched to a white wool pad and began buffing my work.
The 3M product returned a very nice shine, and I worked the entire walkway all the way to the stern with a single white wool pad. :)
I have to say that I am happy with the results.

The rest of the day was spent working on details, such as the bow railing and the underside of the bow pulpit.
No photos, as there wasn't really much to see. The shine in the washboard gelcoat is quite nice though.

BOE Marine told me that my bottom paint came in today, so I'm 'on the schedule' for that to be done.
They will be using an 'eco friendly' non-copper based bottom paint from Pettit that has been tested in this area, and should be safe for the aluminum motor bracket.
We shall see how well it works when she is pulled next winter!

Getting closer...

Sunny day today with a high temp of about 58 degrees.

Took the opportunity to get the buffer out and put a second coat of wax on the pilothouse top, the 'splatter' walkway, and the washboards.
Everything looks much better and all surfaces shine like new.

After the buffing was done, I got back to detail waxing...
Rocket launchers, roof edges and roof under hangs, and the entire top section of the pilothouse to include the sail panels, windows and window frames.
I even got the chance to wash down the lower pilothouse cabin walls inside with a Simple Green solution.
It's amazing how dirty those walls get in only one year. :(

At this point, I could probably finish the detailing in my slip, but I'm still waiting on getting the bottom painted, so until then, I'll detail until splash day.
Thunderstorms predicted tomorrow so I'll get back on it Wednesday.

Only one photo today...
Ever seen twin 300 Yamahas in white?
These were hung on a 29 Everglades in the BOE service bay. Dang...

.............Must be the pearlescent white paint job on the OB covers creating an illusion, but I -swear- the Port engine looks like it's mounted higher than the Stb one...... :? :? Or does your camera have a list?

Optical illusion brother. :)
I think it's because they are turned...

I cannot confirm this, but rumor has it that that white paint on those Yamaha's cost $2,500.00 extra...
... per motor.

You are looking at a $5k premium right there folks.

I hear a lot of guys down in FLA and the deep southern states choose the white option, because the blue cooks in the sun and fades the cowlings.

And whats another $2500 when you have 3 or 4 of those on the back of a 40ft yellowfin

Kev thanks again for turning me on to that buff magic. Im really liking the way the boat is coming out using it. Ive never been able to get the PH to really shine since Ive owned the boat. Started the trunk cabin area yesterday and I am really happy with they way its coming out.
I switched from the wool pad, to the white foam pad and I am having better results.
Also I hit the bow and grab rails quickly to see how it would work on those and those too are looking better then ever.

It was cloudy when the pic was taken so it doesn't do it a lot of justice

The reflection looks like a mirror. :)

I can't take credit for the Buff Magic find.
I found out from a post Sully made to the beginning of this project thread.
Watched the YouTube videos and decided to give it a try... but with the Makita rather than the Surhold random orbitals.

Lots of wind here today.
Trying to decide if I'm going over the bridge to detail today or not.
I do have work to do inside the p-house, so I'll probably put a few hours inside and out of the wind.

Thanks to both of you guys then
Im glad I bought that shurhold buffer it makes getting in those tight spots a whole lot easier then usuing the big craftsman that I have.

Today was sunny with temps in the mid 50's, but with a *lot* of wind. :(

Spent the first part of the day in the pilothouse working on the seat bases trying to keep warm.
I used a liquid compound with a 'medium' grit to clean and shine the metal, then applied a cleaner wax to seal and shine.
Turned out OK for never having been done in 18 years. :)

When it warmed up a bit, I went about putting another coat of wax on the outrigger bases, the windows and frames, and the underside of the pulpit.
At this point, everything has been given at least 2 coats of wax, and in some areas, it has gotten 3 coats.
I think I can call it done until I get her into my slip to finish some details in the cockpit that require a hose and some Simple Green.

Checked with the BOE Marine office and it looks like my bottom paint isn't scheduled until Wed the 30th. :(
That being the case, I might spend another day or two over there piddling around, but at this point I'm declaring the 'clean and wax portion' done.
The Makita is coming out of the Jeep and going back into the garage!

A few photos from today...

Weather today was sunny, temps in the low 60's and a slight breeze. Got a lot done.

Got a nice surprise when I got to the boat and found that the bottom paint had been completed.
Wasn't scheduled to be done until this coming Wednesday, but they got it done early. :D

Since I need to be at an event sponsored by my fire department tomorrow, and with rain forecast for Tues through Thurs, I decided that today might be my last chance to finish up some of the bigger details before she launches.
Broke out a can of Colonite Fleet Wax and gave the entire hull a top coat.

While I was taking a 'break', I broke out the transducer paint and gave the Airmar tilted element a coat of paint.
Next up... I started on the pilothouse and gave the entire trunk cabin and the sail panels a coat of Fleet Wax.
Then... the transducer got a second coat of paint.
Finally, the washboard edges above the rub rail and the bow pulpit got a coat of Fleet Wax.

6 hours of 'wax-on, wax-off' and my shoulders are telling me my rotator cuff(s) are toast.
These should be the last photos until we schedule her to go into the water on launch day.

A couple of interesting boats in the BOE yard today.
First is a 29' USCG 'Metal Shark' with twin Hondas.

The other was a brand new Parker 21SE in yellow.
