The lid of the livewell on my cc always struck me as wasted space, so I attach a heavy plastic tray, lined with carpet, and use it as a catch-all for plugs, pliers, you-name-it.

It attaches via the two existing holes in the lid and doesn't interfere with its use in any way. A couple elastic cords keep larger items in the boat. Here's a pic:
